1st Birthday Cake

by Missy Douglas

1st Birthday Cake

1st Birthday Cake

This is the cake I made for my youngest son's first birthday. This was my first attempt at making and using fondant.

I found some ideas online and an easy marshmallow fondant recipe. I had a little trouble with cracking in the fondant, but I think it turned out okay for my very first attempt.

I baked 2 cakes--9x11 and 10x13. Used the 10x13 as the base. I used the 9x11 to cut the 1 shape and used the rest to make the blocks. I based the color blocking based on the party decorations.
I did a crumb coat on the base cake, iced the 1 and blocks with homemade butter cream, then covered with fondant.

I placed the 1 and blocks on the base cake and then decorated the base with colored homemade buttercream. I used color mist for the 1 and then wiped with a damp paper towel to make a bluejeans type affect.

It was pretty basic, as I don't have much cake experience, but I'm trying to learn.
It was a big hit. Everyone was surprised at how good the fondant tasted.
