Cupcake Designs - Cupcake Decorating Ideas
Cupcake Designs are getting crazier as we speak :-). It's been justfive or six years since they re-entered deserts' arena in a big style and pomp. I am glad they did. To be honest with you, for the most part I prefer how they look to how they taste. But that's OK.
I am in constant search for the beautiful cupcake designs of all kinds: vintage, whimsical, simple, wedding, birthday, white, chocolate...you name it...and you'll know I am after it.
You will find a great collection of cupcakes and mini cakes on our blog. Here we would like to share a cupcake experience with you!

Life Ring Preserver Cupcakes
by Marvy Gibbs (San Leon, Texas, United States)
My "water baby" grand-daughter was about to turn 9 yrs old. She decided she wanted a Beach Party.
We had already celebrated her 5th BD by throwing a "Luau Party," and I did not want to structure her beach party as a customery luau, thus an idea of creating a (beach party cake) came to mind...
This evoked thoughts of ordinary and familiar objects one would see any given day at beach...ie. water, sand, life rings, sea shells, beach balls, palm trees, fish.
And, of course, on a magical night; in the glow of a dim fire, my granddaughter's favorite sea creature, a mermaid.
Being a novice, I decided on a simple life ring preserver as the cake. I bought 3 different flavors of cake mixes, and cupcake cups. Once baked and iced, I formed a large double row circle of cupcakes on the board.
Tip: A small dot of icing on bottom of cups keeps them from sliding around when moved Red fruit rollups served as the straps around the ring, twizzlers became the tow ropes on the outside edge of the ring.
We used fondant and the small fondant cutters to cut out letters that spelled out S.S. NINER (9 yrs old) which were placed on each cupcake, across the bottom of the ring, and CAPT. MAKAILEY (her name)across the top.
She was very happy with the results, but I was thinking about candle placement and determined that scattering them in one big circle wasn't very "beachy." It was at this point, that I decided to create an island within the ring. It would fill in the large white circle in the center.
I used crushed Golden Oreo cookies (leave the filling in) for the sand, blue/green fruit rollups for the water, a gummy ring became a life buoy, A gumball became a beach ball. Plus, having an island solved my 'candle issue' by giving me a distinct area, for the nine candles.
(We used candles that burn the same shade as the candle color, which when all lit emit a magical glow) And, of course, behind the colorful flickering, sits a mermaid beside the palm trees. Although, the Cake was an open work in progress, my grand-daughter, my daughter-in-law and myself loved the "when you stumble, make it part of the dance" lesson we learned. The outcome was a 'big hit' (everyone loved it.)
Now, my daughter-in-law wants to make another creative cake for her son's BD next month, my g-daughter was beaming with pride at her party, and the experience, priceless! Tip: Dipping the end of the candle in your icing before setting it in the powdery(sand)holds it upright
