A client, Lucy, asked me to design a cake suitable for her Wedding Anniversary. We came up with this wonderful kiondo design complete with 'market goodies' which were cut-out cakes and shaped into sweet potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, melon etc.
All this to the amazement of our client. This is also a suitable gift to mothers especially on mother's day.

Iyengar bakeries predate Bangalore's darshinis and pizza outlets, but how the orthodox Brahmins learnt to make English stuff with yeast and eggs is an enduring mystery
Iyengar bakeries must be Karnataka's gift to the world. The Iyengars of Tamil Nadu don't run bakeries. The Iyengar bakeries in Chennai – a friend tells me that city has at least two dozen now – are called Bangalore Iyengar bakeries.
How this orthodox Tamil-speaking Brahmin sect got into the business of making English-style buns, puffs and biscuits is one the biggest puzzles in Karnataka's cultural history. A couple of bakery owners tell me they don't eat the cakes they make because they are vegetarian, and can't have eggs.
Among the Iyengars, only the Vadagalai sect is associated with the bakery business. All bakery owners hail from Hassan district, which has also produced a prime minister in H D Deve Gowda.
The Tamil spoken by Hassan Iyengars is Kannada-flavoured, and sounds suspect to the ears of their clansmen in Tamil Nadu. But if you were to hold a baking and confectionery contest between the two, the Kannadiga Iyengars would win hands down.
Every corner in southern Bangalore has an Iyengar bakery, although some newer enterprises, like Butter Sponge, have dropped the caste prefix. Most have names like L J (Lakshmi Janardana) and SLV (Sri Laksmi Venkateshwara).

I never thought that this is what I would be doing in my life. I had my daughter at the age of 17 and also got married to the dad (Aaron).
I had jobs here and there but none ever interested me, so I would quit. After having my third child, his first birthday was coming up and I told my husband I want to make his cake.
He said "ok" and "lets get what you need". So I made my sons 1st birthday cake, and it turned out fantastic and sparked something in me. I started buying equipement, pans, tips, and books.
My mom started asking me to bake cakes for things going on at her work, like pot lucks and bake sales. People she worked with started telling me that my cakes were sooo good that I should start selling them.
So I said sure why not, I can try it out. So I did. Orders started coming in slowly. I then was told to post on Craigs list and I was amazed to see how many people contacted me for cake. Now I am doing cakes for all occasions and doing custom made cakes and designing them.
I have 1 to 3 cakes a weekend now. I love doing what I do and love making people smile and seeing them get excited.

Geralyn Sarro knows when she has done her job well. She’s a pastry chef, and it’s her business to lead customers down a decadent path. When she entered a recent contest, which also happened to be her first, Sarro decided to marry one decadent pursuit with another.
So was born a small wedding cake she called “Texas to Have and to Hold ’em,†which drew upon the popularity of the poker variation Texas Hold ’em and included edible poker chips and playing cards. Sarro emerged as the winner from among 27 other competitors and took home $1,000.
She also received a bit of advice from Charmaine Jones, a celebrity judge also known as “The Cake Diva.â€The PattyCakes Creative Cake Holiday Competition, held Dec. 4 at the First District Plaza’s Delaware Ballroom, in Philadelphia, judged entries on appearance, originality, decoration and technique.
Sarro, 28, called the experience “a big step for me.†The Newark resident was an owner and the pastry chef at Engine Co. 3, the Middletown restaurant that was a family affair until early last year, when the 10-month-old establishment closed.
Her passion is creating pastries, and she intends to expand her role beyond that of the freelance chef.“I’d never really had the nerve to compete before,†Sarro says. “I didn’t expect to win. And I got up there, and they told me I was the grand prize winner, and I started shaking.
I couldn’t believe it.â€Afterward, Jones, whose cakes have appeared in magazines, in soap-opera weddings and on The Food Network, spoke with Sarro for more than a half-hour. The Cake Diva offered these tips: Start a Web site. Get professional photographs of your creations and send the shots to editors of industry magazines.

In 2008 I went back to work in a bakery after being a stay at home mom, and this opened a lot of doors for me.
Now I operate my own business (very small of course, it's just me) while still working at the bakery I love. I make all of my cakes and icings from scratch, and have never done the same cake design twice. Each cake I make is custom designed to fit a theme or match a color.
