Wedding Cake by Jenny Thompson

Halloween Skull Cake (adapted from Lauri Ditunno's design)

Halloween Skull Cake (adapted from Lauri Ditunno's design)

I am an aspiring cake baker/decorator who has been inspired by tv's Food Network's "Amazing Wedding Cakes" program.

I saw Lauri Ditunno from The Cake Atelier in NY City make a "skull cake" for a goth style wedding.

I was immediately entranced by the design considering the time of year it was presented, and decided to try my hand at making my own "skull cake" for a Halloween party my son was making his first band appearance at.

For anyone who has seen the program, all went well except for the spider web, and I did not have the time or help to make the 40 or so gumpaste roses for the bottom tier, but I did manage to make 14 gumpaste roses, white chocolate tombstones, and my marbled fondant closely matches Lauri's.

It was a blast to make, and everyone LOVED it, especially the white chocolate skull with a rose perched precariously in it's teeth!

Outstanding

I do not think there is ANYTHING wrong with creating something from a picture or from an example of what someone else did. I think you did an outstanding job and anyone who says other wise can go sit and spin! Nice job, Jenny! I'm planning to do this for my Halloween party. Only I think I am doing 14" 10" 6" so my ledges are larger to place the candy decorations on each.

Thanks for posting this pic. It is beautiful.

Dear Jenny,
I really love cakes. I watch the TV show amazing wedding cakes all the time. Actually this Lauri's version of this cake was featured. I love this cake it is my favorite and I decided that if my wedding cake did not look like a dog it would be that one......but then I though it would be copying a cake design and the whole purpose of those cake bakeries is that everything is different. Which brings me to my reason of writing to you. Although I admire your reason for making this cake and even though I really like it is isn't the original which makes it less....cool. And it is a copy of Lauri's design. I really like her ad her cakes and I think that even though it's okay to admire them, it's better to do it from admiring a picture. Keep up the good cakes.
