German chocolate cakes are one of my favorites but the take quite a bit of time to make, so we seldom had it at our house until I found and easy recipe for German chocolate cake.
The recipe calls for using a yellow cake mix and adding ingredients like condensed milk, cocoa, instant pudding, buttermilk, oil and eggs to it.
Then you make the frosting/filling with evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter. When this mixture thickens you add coconut and pecans.
A friend used a box of German chocolate cake mix and made the icing from her original recipe and her family never noticed the difference. I don’t know what she does but her icing is absolutely wonderful.
Once you have frosted your cake, there is seldom any decorating done. However sometimes I use some marzipan fruit or flowers. My grandchildren think it isn’t a “real” cake unless it has decorations.
