Treasure chest cakes are very popular right now with school age children.
You can use either a mix or your favorite from scratch recipe. Depending on what kind of cake you choose to make, this can be an easy recipe. However with the cutting, building and decorating, it is a time consuming project.
Bake your cake in a 13x9x2 inch pan. A two inch piece is cut out of the center of the cake. The two remaining pieces become the top and bottom of the chest. The removed piece is sliced into two long wedges that will hold the lid open.
You will need lots of edible treasures such as coins, Rolo candies, chocolate kisses, rock candy necklaces, fruit by the foot and mini-jawbreakers.
The fruit "leather" is wrapped around the chest, jawbreakers are pressed into the icing as nail heads. Now fill the chest and serving tray with the treasure decorations.
